Global Container Terminals USA (GCT) with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has started construction of new ship-to-rail project, ExpressRail Port Jersey facility (Greenville Yard) at PANYNJ port.

Situated near the newly expanded GCT Bayonne container terminal, the new intermodal facility is designed to handle 250,000 containers, which is equivalent to 430,000TEU per annum.

Planned to be completed by 2018, Greenville Yard will connect the PANYNJ’s GCT Bayonne terminal to CSX and Norfolk Southern’s extensive rail network in the US.

PANYNJ will invest $56m to build the facility, which will feature 9,600ft of track.

"This project will not only expedite the movement of cargo through the region, but will take hundreds of thousands of truck trips off the road annually."

Once completed, the facility will eliminate 375,000 trucks from highways in a year, reducing 18,300t of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey executive director Pat Foye said: "As the port business continues to grow with the arrival of new, lower emissions, larger ships, it’s critical that we invest in projects to deal with the increase in cargo in a sustainable way, maintaining our quality of life
