Rolls-Royce has won a contract to supply four of its Bergen B33:45L diesel engines to power the Norwegian cruise and transport company Color Line's new hybrid ferry.

Delivery of the four engines from Rolls-Royce is scheduled to be carried out in March, and the newly signed deal also includes an option to provide engines for a second vessel.

Color Line’s new hybrid ferry was designed by Fosen and is set to be built at Ulstein Verft yard in Norway. Construction of the ferry is expected to be completed by 2019.

The vessel will be a plug-in hybrid combining diesel and electrical power, and will be deployed to serve the route between Sandefjord in Norway and Strømstad in Sweden.

Its batteries can be recharged via a power cable with electricity from Color Line’s own shore facilities, or recharged onboard by the ship's generators.

The vessel will be able to carry 2,000 passengers and 500 cars, measuring a total length of 160m.

Rolls-Royce Marine Engines VP Kjell Harloff said: “The shipbuilding industry in Norway has lately proven its competitiveness internationally in the cruise and ferry market, and we are proud to be part of these innovative new building projects.

“Our Bergen engines have now been sold to nine vessels in this particular segment over the past year. It is a track record which demonstrates a highly attractive and competitive engine range.”

Rolls-Royce’s Bergen B33:45 in-line diesel engines are currently available in six, eight and nine cylinders configurations.

The company has so far sold around 60 B33:45 engines for powering various vessel types worldwide, including ships from the UK, Norway, Spain, Canada, China, Singapore and New Zealand.
