Finland-based drive train technology specialist Switch has secured a deal from WE Tech Solutions to supply its permanent magnet (PM) shaft generators for two new chemical tankers.

The 18,600dwt tankers are currently under construction and will be owned by Swedish shipping company Ektank.

Ektank intends to reduce its operational costs using the PM-based shaft generator, as well as improve the environmental performance and overall efficiency of its shipping activities.

Switch business development manager Mika Koli said: “Our modular, flexible and lightweight PM shaft generators help shipowners meet their ambitious objectives, while also delivering real savings and efficiency gains.

“We see huge potential in marine, and the decision of respected shipowners such as Ektank to invest in PM machines demonstrates that our belief is well founded.

“We’ll be looking to build on this momentum going forwards and raise awareness of the transformative effect of Switch technology throughout the industry.

"We believe this is just the start of something akin to an on-board energy revolution.”

Switch was previously contracted by WE Tech in November to provide PM shaft generators for two 12,000dwt roll-on/ roll-off (RoRo) vessels to be owned by Toll Shipping.

WE Tech and Switch for the vessels are scheduled to begin delivery of the contracted equipment by August.

Switch has received more than 30 orders for its technology since it first entered the marine sector in 2013.
