Norway-based TMC Compressors (TMC) is set to launch a new boil-off gas compressor at Nor-Shipping event in Oslo, Norway, which is set to be held later this year.

The new boil-off gas compressor is said to offer both financial and environmental benefits for users, and can be used on all liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuelled vessels.

TMC Sales and Business Development director Hans Petter Tanum said: “By compressing the boil-off gas to the required pressure in order to supply it as fuel directly into the ship’s engine, you will have an optimal system with regards to energy efficiency.”

The company will offer a variety of boil-off gas compressors ranging from 30kW-450kW.

Onboard an LNG-fuelled vessel, heat from the surroundings increases the temperature inside the cooled-down LNG fuel tanks, thereby causing liquid to evaporate. The gas generated from this process is known as boil-off gas.

TMC notes that the new system captures the boil-off gas from the LNG fuel tanks onboard, then compresses it with a TMC compressor and injects it into the main engine as fuel.

"Using LNG as fuel is becoming increasingly popular because it has lower levels of harmful emissions to air compared with conventional marine fuels."

Tanum added: “Using LNG as fuel is becoming increasingly popular because it has lower levels of harmful emissions to air compared with conventional marine fuels.

"However, the biggest bonus with boil-off gas is that you are able to reduce the vessel’s fuel costs quite significantly.”

The marine boil-off gas compressor system can also be used on vessels that are powered by dual fuel, for example LNG in combination with bunker oil.

The event will begin on 30 May and will run until 2 June.
