Finland-based WE Tech Solutions (WE Tech), along with technology specialist Switch, has been selected to provide their permanent magnet shaft generator solution to Toll Shipping, Australia's two new roll-on / roll-off (RORO) vessels.

Delivery of the equipment, which includes WE Tech’s variable frequency drive technology and Switch’s PM shaft generator solution, is scheduled to begin by August next year.

The solution, to be equipped in the two 12,000 deadweight tonnage (dwt) RORO vessels, will help the main engine of the ship to operate at variable speeds.

"Thanks to WE Drive, the propulsion machinery can be operated at optimal duty points at all vessel speeds."

Additionally, both the online direct-drive shaft generators will generate power of up to 3,400kw for the ship’s electrical network.

Once completed, the new vessels, to be built at Jinling Shipyard in China, will replace Toll’s existing RORO vessels.

WE Tech Solutions sales manager Martin Andtfolk said: “WE Tech is widely known for making smart marine energy systems and is regarded as the leading solution provider within the industry.

“Thanks to WE Drive, the propulsion machinery can be operated at optimal duty points at all vessel speeds.

“This saves an enormous amount of fuel and substantially decreases environmentally harmful emissions. The solution also efficiently distributes power to the bow thrusters.”

The company also noted that its solution would help save fuel when the vessels are in the harbour.

The equipment further delivers up to 3,000kw of cleaner and cheaper shore power for the vessels’ electrical network, reducing the need for using auxiliary generators.

Currently, Toll Shipping provides shipping services between Tasmania and mainland Australia.
