Danish shipping company Norden has formed a partnership with Kvasir Technologies to develop sustainable ship biofuel from plant material.

Kvasir is a spinout of the Technical University of Denmark.

Norden’s partnership with Kvasir is part of the company’s efforts to make shipping more sustainable.

As part of the 3.5-year collaboration, a full-scale test of Kvasir’s fuel will be conducted on one of Norden’s vessels.

The testing will focus on exploring biofuel characteristics and prove its suitability for future use.

In the process, Norden will continuously share its insights into the vessel handling and the properties the fuel must have to be a viable and functioning option.

The latest collaboration is part of ShippingLab joint industry initiative, which focuses on developing Danish competences in the fields of digitalisation, autonomous shipping and environment-friendly technology.

The Danish Maritime Fund, Innovation Fund Denmark, Orient’s Fund and Lauritzen Fonden are supporting the initiative.

Røjel added: “Norden wants to be a front runner in this phase of experimentation and help gather intelligence that will hopefully make a positive impact on greenhouse gas emissions and help the industry reach the ambitious goal for 2050 set by the International Maritime Organization.”
