NYK and NYK Group companies MTI and Japan Marine Science (JMS) have developed a new system that assists seafarers at the time of berthing operations.

By evaluating a vessel’s controllability, the system will be able to visualise the risk in the berthing operation and reduce the burden on the operator, eliminating accidents that occur due to heavy workload and accidents caused by human factors.

The system supports crew during the critical time when they are required to provide instructions to tugs and control the rudder as well as the engine.

NYK’s new patent-pending software is capable of assessing the controllability of a ship and visualises accident risks in real time.

Information such as distance to the wharf, ship speed, performance parameters, tugboat arrangement, and weather data will be analysed by the system prior to visualising the risk.

“Ship operators can assess accident risk with the help of a tablet to confirm the relative position and the vessel’s approach speed.”

This can reduce berthing accidents by alerting of risks to avoid accidents caused by misjudgment.

NYK has already carried out trials on actual vessels and now plans to gradually introduce the system to its managed ships. The software will be offered for sale by JMS.

The company expects to apply the technology used in the system to the automatic shore-arriving system for manned autonomous ships.

The NYK Group will continue to promote digitalisation for safe operation in accordance with its medium-term management plan ‘Staying Ahead 2022 with Digitalization and Green.’
