Peab has received an Skr328m ($35.2m) contract for the construction of two new ferry berths in the Port of Trelleborg in Sweden.

The contract was awarded by Trelleborgs Hamn AB and includes the construction of ramps and a side ramp to a current ferry berth.

The Port of Trelleborg is the Scandinavia’s largest roll-on / roll-off (RoRo) port and handles approximately 30 arrivals and departures each day.

Peab will construct a new landmass where the ocean is present to expand the port.

Dredged material from the floor of the ocean will be stabilised and paved to form a part of the port.

Connected to the new ferry berths, the project also includes approximately 700m of tonguing for the new dock constructions.

In addition, Peab will do the groundwork and build ramps and other work for the port. Peab is responsible for the planning and construction of all the measures included in the project.

The new ferry berths will shift the ferry traffic away from Trelleborg, which is expected to lead to environmental advantages, including improved air quality and logistics, reduced time and increased safety.

Peab Region Manager Göran Wiking said: “We look forward to being part of developing the port and contributing to Port of Trelleborg’s vision of strengthening its position as the Baltic Sea’s most efficient and climate-smart port.

“One of Peab’s strengths is that we are local and can ensure we have the right resources throughout the project from complex groundwork to a facility that is up and running.”

Peab will focus on reducing the environmental impact of phase one of construction and will use its ECO-Betong and ECO-Asfalt products.

ECO-Asfalt decreases CO₂ emissions by approximately 63% compared to conventional asphalt.

Port of Trelleborg CEO Jörgen Nilsson said: “We are pleased to see the Port of Trelleborg continue the extension of the new ferry berths according to plan, now that we are signing a contract with Peab to build ferry berths 11 and 12, focusing on sustainability on every level.”

The project construction will begin in June and is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
