Cargo ship operators Polsteam and Nova Ship Tech have awarded two different contracts to Alfa Laval for installing ballast water management systems (BWMS) on their entire fleet.

Under the contracts, Alfa Laval will provide its PureBallast 3 systems for dozens of Polsteam and Nova Ship Tech vessels.

Alfa Laval PureBallast head Anders Lindmark said: “Leading actors like Polsteam and Nova Ship Tech SA are now pursuing ballast water treatment system retrofits in earnest.

“In light of recent directives from authorities, they are keen to secure not just the right technology, but also a stable partner who will be there to support them in the long term.”

The new fleet agreement between Polsteam and Alfa Laval is an expansion of a previous deal signed between the companies last year on the supply of PureBallast 3 systems.

As part of the previous deal, Alfa Laval is currently installing six systems on Polsteam vessels.

The latest deal has brought the total number of PureBallast 3 systems to be installed on Polsteam vessels to 60 units.

“All the systems will be able to handle large flows of at least 1,000m³/h, with 16 systems handling 2,000m³/h or more.”

The new deal with Nova Ship Tech will see the installation of PureBallast 3 systems on 34 vessels.

Nova Ship Tech technical manager Francesco Costagliola said: “Intervening in the existing structures and systems of ships in operation is much more complex than a whole newbuild project.

“Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 has a compact and highly flexible structure that facilitates installation as a retrofit.

“Above all, Alfa Laval has the field expertise and proven operating procedures to adapt it to any ship.”

The PureBallast system, a chemical-free technology sold and serviced by Alfa Laval, is equipped with an improved UV reactor, which was developed by Alfa Laval in collaboration with Wallenius Water.
