The Port of Gävle in Sweden and its operator Yilport Gävle are set to double the site’s container capacity to 600,000 TEU annually in a bid to achieve continued growth.

Both parties have entered a joint venture (JV) worth Skr700m ($83.09m) in support of the initiative, which comprises the construction of a second dock that is currently being built with cranes, as well as an increase in depth to accommodate additional and larger container vessels at the port.

The expansion is expected to be completed in the final quarter of 2019 and will allow the port to serve up to four ships simultaneously.

Yilport Nordic general manager Eryn Dinyovszky said: “Within a 250km radius of Gävle, almost 17 million tonnes of steel, paper, and timber are produced every year.

“A lot of it is already being exported by sea, containerised and through us, and that volume will definitely grow.”

The expansion is expected to attract more export business to the port and enable Yilport to increase import volumes.

The National Food Agency of Sweden is also developing a new laboratory to examine imported foodstuff in connection with the expanded facility.

Port of Gävle CEO Fredrik Svanbom said: “The Port of Gävle is just two hours from Stockholm.

“First-class road and rail connections make it beneficial for cargo owners not only just in our region, but also in other parts of Sweden, to increase their imports through the Port of Gävle.

“Our extensive new investments generate a completely new environment for what I like to call ‘The Northern Port of Stockholm’.”

The expansion has been made possible via cooperation between the owner of the infrastructure, municipal Gävle Hamn and Yilport Gävle.
