Australia’s Port of Newcastle is set to develop a new container terminal to improve the job and business opportunities in the Hunter region.

The proposed Newcastle Container Terminal is also expected to create jobs and reduce the number of trucks off Sydney’s roads through expanded use of the port’s rail connectivity.

To be built at the port’s Mayfield site, the terminal is expected to handle two million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) of cargo annually.

The terminal site will be equipped with a shipping channel that can accommodate vessels up to 10,000 TEU or more with some ancillary channel modifications.

Once built, the Newcastle Container Terminal is expected to reduce cost for exporters and importers in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, as well as save the NSW Government billions in infrastructure expenditure, reduce port congestion and provide other benefits.

Port of Newcastle CEO Craig Carmody said: “The potential for a container terminal in Newcastle to diversify and grow the NSW economy is far bigger than the NSW government seems to realise.

“We are already exploring a range of options based on global best practice and I am looking forward to discussing our plans with the state government and port developers who have expressed an interest in this exciting project.
