The Port of Everett, Washington, US, has purchased two STS container cranes to be deployed at its South Terminal Modernisation project.

A Foss Maritime tug and barge left for the Port of Los Angeles to pick up the cranes and bring them to Everett for unloading.

Once the tug returns to Everett port with cranes, the tidally dependent offloading process will be launched. Unloading of both cranes is expected to take around seven days.

Subsequently, the two cranes will be placed in storage for maintenance and upgrades while work continues on the rest of the terminal enhancements.

The Port of Everett has allocated a total of $57m for the modernisation of the South Terminal to support more over-dimensional cargo such as aerospace parts for the new Boeing 777X aircraft.

The port believes that the two STS container cranes are an important part of its efforts to improve cargo-handling efficiency.

Port of Everett COO Carl Wollebek said: “The completion of this upgrade will add another full-service berth at the port to accommodate project, bulk, breakbulk, high and heavy and containerised cargoes.

“We are excited to be able to add this additional option to our current and future customers.”

The South Terminal facility, according to the Port of Everett, is an important piece of the port’s overall Seaport Modernization efforts.

Once completed, the South Terminal dock will be able to accommodate two, 100ft gauge rail-mounted container cranes and provide vaults for ships.

In October 2017, the Port of Everett Commission approved the building of the port’s South Terminal wharf modernisation project and authorised staff to begin soliciting construction bids.
