Singapore-based Saga LNG Shipping has received the delivery of the ABS-classed liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Saga Dawn.

According to the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Saga Dawn is the first LNG carrier in the world that features a cargo containment system based on International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements for independent type A tanks.

China Merchants Heavy Industry constructed the vessel at its Jiangsu shipyard located in Haimen, China. In June, the 45,000m³ Saga LNG shipping career completed its three weeks of gas trials.

ABS Eastern Hemisphere Operations senior vice-president Eric Kleess said: “ABS has a track record of working with innovators in gas worldwide, and we are proud that this project joins the list of successful projects.

“Innovation is essential to move our industry forward and it is our mission to work with the designers and builders to harness the benefits of these designs while keeping safety at the forefront.”

Saga Dawn is based on LNT Marine’s LNT45 design and incorporates a number of innovative solutions delivered by Wartsila, LNT Marine, Kongsberg and FKAB.

To protect the tanks, laminated wooden supports and liquid-tight thermal insulation attached to the hull compartment have been provided. It acts as an independent secondary barrier.

LNT Marine CEO Kjetil Sjølie Strand said: “After nearly ten years of research and development, we are delighted to see the completion and delivery of the first LNG carrier based on our LNT A-BOX technology.

“We would like to thank CMHI, Saga and ABS for excellent cooperation throughout the project.”

In September, ABS and South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) signed an agreement to develop a next-generation LNG vessel.
