Siemens Digital Industries Software has agreed to take over the Foran software business of Spain-based Sener Engineering, an engineering and technology company, to enhance its marine design and engineering capabilities.

The financial terms of the deal, which also includes the addition of the Foran team and its customer portfolio, were not revealed.

Foran is a software that combines computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided engineering (CAE) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). It is used to assist in the designing, constructing and engineering of marine structures and ships.

The business will be included in Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio upon completion of the acquisition in Q4 2021.

This integration would provide a comprehensive portfolio of software and services related to all facets of a ship’s lifecycle, including concept design, production and operations, as well as optimised service lifecycle management.

With a focus on achieving Shipyard 4.0 and sustainability targets, Siemens aims to support marine clients in embracing a digital twin approach for designing and building vessels.

Siemens Digital Industries Software CEO and president Tony Hemmelgarn said: “The acquisition of Foran enhances our marine digital twin, adding preeminent capabilities to our integrated ship design and engineering digital thread solution.

“By adding Foran’s extensive tools to the Xcelerator portfolio and leveraging the team’s industry expertise, we will be able to offer commercial and naval shipbuilding customers better control of their ship design and manufacturing process as they transition to Shipyard 4.0.”

Sener managing director Gabriel Alarcón said: “With over 150 shipyard and design office customers across 40 countries, Foran technology provides a strong position for Siemens to better support customers across the marine industry.

“At the same time, Siemens’ global reach and the integration of the Foran team into Siemens helps guarantee current Foran clients continuity and improvement to the services provided with a strategic vision for ongoing developments.”

With this deal, the companies will integrate their expertise across commercial marine projects, regulation compliance and defence industry standards.

Meanwhile, Sener Group will retain and continue to fortify its traditional marine engineering business line.

The business provides design, engineering and consultancy services for different kinds of ships and offshore vessels.
