Dredging International, a consortium of Van Oord and DEME Group subsidiary, has secured a €313m contract to upgrade the Świnoujście-Szczecin fairway in Poland.

The design and build contract will include the deepening and widening of the fairway along a 62km section to -12.5m from the current -10.5m.

The investment will be made by the Maritime Office in Szczecin with an aim to improve access to the Szczecin seaport and boost the port’s capacity to handle an increasing volume of cargo.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin by the end of this year and expected to take 42 months to complete.

DEME Europe area director Eric Tancré said: “The combination of state-of-the-art dredging equipment, the consortium’s vast international experience in design and build projects and most importantly our integrated team of experts enabled DEME and Van Oord to bring the most cost-efficient solution.”

“The Świnoujście-Szczecin fairway upgrade project will involve the enforcement of slopes and quay walls along the channel, as well as relocation of cables and navigational supports.”

The consortium will use the dredged materials to build two artificial islands in the Szczecin lagoon.

Co-financed by the European Union, the Świnoujście-Szczecin fairway upgrade project will involve the enforcement of slopes and quay walls along the channel, as well as relocation of cables and navigational supports.

Van Oord Europe area director Govert van Oord said: “It is a challenging project and an opportunity to demonstrate Van Oord’s and DEME’s capabilities in offering integrated dredging solutions to our client.

“Our project team is looking forward to working closely with our client and all stakeholders, in order to contribute to the further modernisation of the maritime infrastructure in Poland and at the same time enhancing the environment during execution.”

In July, Anaklia Development Consortium (ADC) awarded a contract to Van Oord to conduct early dredging and reclamation works on the Phase 1 portion of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port project.

Upon completion, the port will be the first deepwater port in Georgia.
