Thailand has denied Laem Chabang port entry to Holland America Line’s Westerdam cruise ship due to the fear of the coronavirus.

The ship was scheduled to dock at the port in Thailand where it would have ended the trip on 13 February.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said: “I have issued orders. Permission to dock refused.”

Deputy Transport Minister Atirat Ratanasate said that the ship would receive fuel, medicine and food from the country.

The epidemic has so far killed 1,018 and infected more than 43,000 people. Thailand has 32 confirmed cases with no deaths so far.

The ship has no confirmed cases on board and has not been quarantined.

The cruise ship was on a 14-day East Asia cruise and had stopped at Hong Kong, China, earlier this month. It was previously turned away by Japan, the Philippines and Guam.

The ship carries 802 crew members and 1,455 passengers on board, of which 662 are American citizens.

The cruise line has cancelled the sailing date from Japan on 15 February. The other sailings after 15 February have not been cancelled.

Carnival Corporation subsidiary, Holland America Line said: “However, we are assessing the impact of current port restrictions in Asia on cruises departing 29 February or later. We will communicate details as they become finalised in the next few days.”

Confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Diamond Princess, which is quarantined in Japan, nearly doubled with 135 total cases.

Passengers onboard Dream Cruises’ World Dream cruise ship in Hong Kong were allowed to leave after the completion of control measures.
