Wärtsilä has received system-level cyber certification from UK’s maritime classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) for its fully connected and integrated operational systems.

The approval is for network architecture pertaining to the company’s integrated main as well as auxiliary machinery.

LR has awarded its ShipRight SAFE AL2 certification to Wärtsilä’s Data Collection Unit (WDCU). It provides approval-in-principle (AiP) for the complete Wartsila integrated system network.

Part of Wärtsilä’s Data Bridge solution, the WDCU collects and transmits operational data to the Cloud for remote monitoring. This facilitates advanced analytics, providing insight into a ship’s performance.

According to the company, this certification is one of the first of its kind to be awarded worldwide.

Wärtsilä said that developing flexibility against illegal access, software failures and attacks on ships’ systems has become critical at a time when operational and information solutions on board ships are being connected together.

The ShipRight procedure outlines an Accessibility Level (AL) for autonomous or remote access to the system to obtain onboard data.

Wärtsilä Marine Business cybersecurity general manager Jonas Blomqvist said: “This certification validates Wärtsilä’s work in mitigating cybersecurity risks with the appropriate controls in the integrated system when collecting and sharing operational data.

“This takes Wärtsilä cure provides customers with the assurance that they are safe to use.”

The certification will allow Wärtsilä to help the shipping industry comply with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) rules. They mandate that ships must have measures to combat cybersecurity risks in their safety management systems (SMS).

The IMO cybersecurity rules come into force from 1 January 2021.

Wärtsilä and the CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company recently signed a development deal for hybrid ship construction.
