Marine technology company Wartsila has secured a contract to supply a range of its electric solutions and engines for two new ferries at the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in China.

The vessels are being constructed for Finnlines, a part of Grimaldi Group. They will feature the latest environmental and technical concepts.

The order for the engines was placed in July, while the remaining Wartsila equipment was ordered in September.

The two ferries will operate across the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland.

They will be equipped with Wartsila 46F main engines, thrusters, and an advanced electric package, including a hybrid shaft generator system.

In addition, the order package comprises a thruster control system and an energy management system, which will enable ships to operate without emissions, on either shore power while in port, or batteries.

Finnlines newbuilding department head Mikael Lindholm said: “This investment is aimed at energy efficiency and emissions reduction and is part of our intention to lead the development of energy-efficient transport services in the Baltic Sea region. We have Wartsila solutions in most of our ships, so we are familiar with the efficiency and reliability they offer.”

Wartsila Marine Power sales general manager Mika Ojutkangas said: “High efficiency and sustainable operations are increasingly becoming the key focus areas for ferry operators around the world, and our range of products, systems, and integrated solutions are designed and developed to achieve the highest levels of performance in these areas. This latest Finnlines order is further evidence of the success of this approach. These new ferries will be among the most eco-friendly ferries of their type, setting new standards for sustainability and energy efficiency.”

With a capacity to carry nearly 1,100 passengers, the 230m-long ferries will have 5,100 lane metres for rolling freight.

The Wartsila equipment will be delivered to the yard in early 2022. The ferries are expected to enter operational service in 2023.

In November, Wartsila secured a new order for the delivery of the fully integrated Wartsila Hybrid Solution for three new-build eco-friendly 5,000dwt bulk carriers.

The 90m-long ships are being constructed at the Colombo Dockyard in Sri Lanka for Misje Eco Bulk, a unit of the Norway-based Misje Rederi group.
