Wärtsilä has been selected to provide the engines, navigation system and a variety of other equipment for a new ferry being built for Finland-based operator Viking Line.

Wärtsilä will supply six 31DF dual-fuel engines that operate primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG) as part of the deal.

The engines are designed to consume less fuel and release a reduced amount of exhaust emissions, in addition to offering low operating costs for operators.

They have also been optimised to leave as minimal an environmental footprint as possible.

In addition, Wärtsilä has agreed to provide its LNGPac fuel storage and supply unit and an Compact Silencer System (CSS), as well as high-quality bow thrusters, a ballast water management system (BWMS),and its Nacos Platinum integrated navigation solution as under the new arrangement.

Wärtsilä’s SmartPredict system, which displays the vessel’s projected future position and heading, is also included in the scope of the contract.

Wärtsilä Marine Solutions president Roger Holm said: “A new era in ferry operations was established in 2013 when Viking Line’s ‘Viking Grace’, with Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines, became the world’s largest RoPax ferry to operate on LNG fuel.

“This latest Viking project represents another milestone as it will be the first vessel fitted with the highly efficient Wärtsilä 31DF engines.

“Both cases highlight the value our know-how and technology brings to our customers.”

The new Viking Line ferry is currently being built at Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry’s yard in China.

An option for a second vessel is also included in the latest deal.

The luxurious and environmentally friendly vessel is scheduled to begin operating across the Baltic Sea between Turku in Finland and Stockholm, Sweden, by early 2021.
