Marine technology company Wartsila has received a contract from Kuwait Petroleum Company (KPC) subsidiary Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) to upgrade its four vessels.

The company will install the Wartsila Fuel Efficiency Boost solution to the main engines of the ships.

It is expected to decrease fuel consumption, which will reduce the impact on the environment by decreasing greenhouse gas emission levels.

Many ship owners, including KOTC, are looking for different ideas to reduce the consumption of fuel and carbon footprint.

The company said that many shipping companies have placed similar orders, following the Wartsila Fuel Efficiency Boost initiative.

The solution is built on two-stroke engine optimisation technology for some Wartsila RT-flex and the deliveries of X-type two-stroke engines delivery.

The four very large crude carriers (VLCCs) of KOTC will be installed with a seven-cylinder Wartsila RT-flex82T two-stroke main engines.

Wartsila Marine Business two-stroke and specialised services Middle East and Asia area sales GM Riad Belaid said: “Our smart marine approach is dedicated to raising efficiencies and improving the environmental sustainability of marine operations. The Wartsila Fuel Efficiency Boost is completely aligned with this philosophy, while at the same time lowering operating costs.”

KOTC acting CEO Ali Shehab added: “By modifying the main engines of these carriers, we are assured of operating with the latest technology and having the best operational efficiency. We know and trust Wartsila’s high-quality products and systems and we appreciate the excellent support they offer.”

The Wartsila Fuel Efficiency Boost is made of increased compression ratio and modified injector nozzles.

With the optimised engine tuning parameters, the technology provides up to 4% of fuel savings.

In the pilot installation, it led to lower fuel consumption of approximately ten to 12t each day compared to a sister vessel on the same route.
