Grimaldi Group’s Finnish subsidiary Finnlines has selected Wartsila to provide hybrid power conversion system for its three new roll-on / roll-off (RoRo) ferries.

The ferries are currently being manufactured at the Nanjing Jinling shipyard in China.

As part of the agreement, Wartsila will provide 5000kWh energy storage system that will enable the ships to operate with zero emissions while at the port. The ships will have Ice Class classification 1A Super.

It will also help to follow the Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) Green Plus class notation.

The equipment will include in-line shaft generators, power take-off / take-in converters and transformers.

Wartsila will deliver the equipment by the second half of this year.

Finnlines Newbuilding Department head Mikael Lindholm said: “Wartsila’s Smart Marine approach to technology development aims at delivering highly efficient solutions with minimal impact on the environment. This order is one more example of how we turn this approach into practical and reliable reality.”

Finnlines CEO Emanuele Grimaldi said: “These new ferries will be among the most environmentally sustainable ships of their type. Finnlines is a frontrunner in the development of hybrid power ships, of marine battery packs and of energy management systems.

“By investing in research and development and by teaming with its suppliers, Finnlines aims at meeting well on time all the ambitious environmental targets set by the IMO and by the international community for shipping.”

In May 2018, Finnlines placed an order for purchasing three RoRo hybrid vessels from Jinling shipyard for more than €200m.

The 238m-long vessels will be able to carry 5,800 lane metres of cargo.

The deliveries of the 17,400t vessels are scheduled to take place from 2020 to 2021.
