Finland-based marine technology firm Wartsila has delivered advanced technology simulators that were installed at a new maritime training facility in Portugal.

The facility is managed by the Port Authority for the ports of Douro, Leixōes and Vano do Castelo (APDL).

The training centre contains Wartsila full mission bridge (FMB) simulator with 360° projection, two tug simulators with 360° liquid crystal display (LCD) and a vessel traffic service (VTS) simulator.

The technology enables pilots, merchant navy officers, tug masters and the crews of seafaring vessels to complete training and challenging exercises, as well as receive certifications.

Wartsila company Transas has developed simulation technology for the training centre.

Wartsila is also responsible for the development of 3D zones and a tug boat model. Previously, the marine technology firm supplied a VTS system for APDL.

APDL operations and safety director Comandante Rui Cunha said: “This is a state-of-the-art training centre with state-of-the-art simulators, and we thank Wartsila for their support throughout this project. The centre will promote both safety and operational efficiency at sea and on inland waterways.

“By being able to re-create actual operating conditions, the training doesn’t need to be carried out on board, thus saving fuel and reducing pollution.

“The River Douro inland waterway has its five locks and corresponding approaches recreated in this simulator, as well as all the scenarios of Porto de Leixoes and Viana do Castelo.

“This allows for intense and continuous training of ships’ crews and for maintaining the skills of APDL pilots and parties.”

Recently, Wartsila signed a contract with cruise operator Hurtigruten to supply sustainable shipping solutions.

The company also won a contract to deliver the LNG fuel storage and supply system for two new trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs) that are being constructed by Keppel Offshore & Marine for the Dutch marine contractor Van Oord.
