Wärtsilä has secured a deal to provide an integrated cargo handling and fuel gas system for two new very large gas carriers (VLGCs) to be operated by Belgium’s Exmar.

Currently being built at Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Philippines (HHIC-Philippines) facility in Subic Bay, the vessels will be used to transport liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

The 80,000m³ VLGCs will be developed to conduct more sustainable operations with a focus on high-efficiency.

As part of the deal, Wärtsilä will supply an integrated cargo handling system that is controlled by the Wärtsilä Nacos Platinum automation platform. While the company’s remote process analytics software has been designed to improve operability and safety.

The Nacos Platinum automation platform is designed to combine and visualise data from the bridge navigation and communication controls, the engine room, and cargo control centre.

This integrated fuel gas system has been designed to facilitate high energy efficiency with reduced carbon emissions to offer a positive energy efficiency design index (EEDI) for vessels. It is also expected to reduce building and operating risks.

“Our aim has been to achieve the best possible operational and economic performance while ensuring the lowest possible environmental footprint.”

Under the agreement, Wärtsilä will also provide its Airguard anti-pollution shaft sealing system that is capable of offering additional security against oil leaking into the sea.

Wärtsilä is expected to deliver the equipment next year, with the vessels due towards the end of 2020.

Exmar Shipping managing director Pierre Dincq said: “These are ‘game-changing’ gas carriers and our aim has been to achieve the best possible operational and economic performance, while at the same time, ensuring the lowest possible environmental footprint.

“Wärtsilä’s systems and solutions will help us meet these targets.

“Exmar has extensive experience with a variety of fuel systems, including HFO, MDO and LNG fuelled steam turbines. Adding LPG as a fuel to this array of fuel systems will be beneficial to Exmar’s reputation as a gas transportation expert.”

Exmar is primarily involved in the supply of floating solutions for the operation, transportation, and processing of gas.
