ABB will provide complete power and propulsion systems for six new liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport vessels to be built by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in South Korea.

Under the $58m order, ABB will supply electrical systems including power generation and distribution systems, electric propulsion and propulsion control systems along with related engineering services.

The electric propulsion concept, combined with the dual-fuel engines, will allow the ships to optimise their fuel selection, energy efficiency and fuel consumption.

The equipment will also enable the vessels to reduce emission levels, compared with traditional diesel mechanical systems.

The LNG ships will be deployed by several oil and gas industry end customers to transport liquefied natural gas and are due for delivery between 2012 and 2015.
