China has revealed plans to invest CNY180bn ($27bn) in a bid to expand throughput capacity of Wuhan New port on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province.

The project is aimed at developing the shipping potential of the river to make the port a shipping centre for cargo trade.

The investment will help expand annual cargo throughput to 200 million tons and container throughput to two million 20teu by 2015.

By 2020, the port’s annual throughput is expected to be 240 million tons and five million teu.

The project will commence in 2011 and will be complete by 2020, according to dredgingtoday.com.
