Honduras has received a $135m loan from the Inter American Development Bank (IADB) to expand and modernise the port of Puerto Cortes.

The deep-sea port handles a large portion of the region’s containerised exports while also handling imports of grains and fertilisers, among other essential goods.

The IADB will help finance the dredging of the port basin and the harbour.

The project will also support the acquisition of specialised equipment and the provision of in-port storage yards, improving port operations and reducing delays in vessel and cargo handling.

The bank also approved $10m to improve control, security and customs services at the port.
