US-based EcoEmissions Solutions has developed an emissions-reducing catalyst injection system that reduces air pollution and fuel consumption.
The pre-combustion system injects a platinum-based catalyst system into diesel engine cylinders, allowing the complete burn of diesel fuel, resulting in more power, lower fuel consumption and an extension of engine life, according to the company.
The system is in line with the International Maritime Organisation’s plan to reduce diesel fuel sulphur limits by 2015 for ships that sail within 370km (230 miles) of US and Canadian coasts.
For non-US Flag vessels, the North American ECA rules will become enforceable in August 2012.
EcoEmissions expects to conduct engine tests on large cruise and cargo ships next year.
