Hyundai Heavy Industries has delivered a 7,000TEU containership equipped with EcoBallast, the first ballast water treatment system to be developed in a shipyard.

EcoBallast aims to protect the marine environment from the discharge of pollutants via ballast water.

Following ratification from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), a ballast water treatment system must be installed on all ships built after 2012 and all ships already in service by 2017.

Hyundai is planning to get final approval from the IMO for its system in early 2010.
