Australia’s Swire Shipping, operator of the Pacific Adventurer, said it is prepared to clean up a fuel oil spill, following claims the company has failed to meet its safety responsibilities.

The company is in discussions with the state and federal governments to arrive at an “acceptable solution” to the problem of spilt fuel oil that resulted from the Pacific Adventurer’s loss of containers during Cyclone Hamish earlier this year.

In March 2009, the Pacific Adventurer leaked 270,000l of fuel off the coast of Queensland during the cyclone.

The ship’s insurer has already provided financial security to the government for up to A$20m, a level of security accepted by the Queensland Government.
