The Canadian Government is calling on the shipping industry to help it develop a sustainable shipbuilding strategy.

Through its Shipbuilding Consultation, the Canadian Government says it is committed to “building and maintaining an effective federal fleet for maritime security and services”.

Its fleet renewal plans could see the government invest in excess of C$40bn to build more than 50 large vessels over the next 30 years.

The process will involve gathering industry opinions on how to bring Canadian taxpayers value and includes talks on long-term investments across the marine sector

Investments will also be made for research and development as well as the establishment of skilled trades and apprenticeship courses.

A fleet revival proposal will require a C$40bn investment to construct 50 big ships over 30 years which would generate direct jobs for 1,200 to 1,500 shipyard workers.
