The International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee has accepted new laws to avert pollution at the time of a ship-to-ship (STS) oil transfer.

The committee agreed to MARPOL Annex I amendments to avoid marine pollutants at the time of STS oil transfer operations.

The amendments include onboard sludge management and a plan to assign certain areas of US and Canadian coastal waters as an emission control area.

The IMO said that pollution prevention during oil cargo transfer between oil tankers at sea will be applicable for oil tankers greater than 150t.
