The US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood has signed a joint Memorandum of Cooperation with the Republic of the Philippines President Gloria Arroyo to tackle piracy.

Under the agreement, the countries will collaborate to increase anti-piracy education and training.

The deal will mean both countries must establish practices to improve ship security, share information and perform drills that help seafarers better react to acts of piracy.

The two nations will also examine ways to strengthen legislation and regulations to address the problem of piracy.
