An 85.5m ferry, ordered by the Canadian Government, will be the first of three vessels to be equipped with a new design of feathering pitch propeller with an increased operating range.

The $65m ferry, ordered by the Government of New Brunswick in March, is being built at the Florida-based Eastern Shipbuilding Group and will feature the Berg Controllable Pitch (BCP) propeller.

In addition to this vessel, two 100m chemical tankers being built at China’s Dingheng (Jiangsu) Shipbuilding Company will also feature the propeller, marinelog.com reports.

The BCP design can feather propeller blades in its customary hydraulic hub, which increases the propeller’s operating pitch range.

The ferry will have 2,600mm, BCP760 propellers, driven by 2,240kW engines running at 277.7rpm and will be constructed to Lloyd’s Register Ice Class 1D.

The tankers will incorporate two 3,600mm diameter, BCP950 propellers each and will be built to Germanischer Lloyd Ice Class E3.

The delivery of the ferry is slated for 2011.
