Ship operators have sought freight surcharges from cargo customers on part of the Rhine in Germany because of low water levels.

The surcharges will compensate vessel owners for losing revenues as their ships must sail partly loaded because of low water, businesstimes.com.sg reports.

Surcharges have been asked for a stretch of the river between Duisburg and Koblenz.

Freight surcharges have been recently imposed on the Danube’s cargo customers.
