The Grand Alliance partners have announced plans to call at a Vietnamese port on the Asia East Coast Express (AEX) service.

The alliance members Hapag-Lloyd, Nippon Yusen Kaisha and Orient Overseas Container Line have agreed to add the deepwater port of Cai Mep to an AEX service that runs from South East Asia through the Suez Canal to the North American East Coast.

The port call at Cai Mep, which handles 70% of Vietnam’s container trade, is scheduled to start from 9 January 2010.

The three Grand Alliance partners will deploy ten ships with an average capacity of 5,500 teu apiece on the AEX service, which is currently served by nine vessels of 5,500 teu.
