China’s Ministry of Transport will allow containers crossing the Taiwan Strait to carry transhipment cargo from other countries.

Taiwanese and Chinese container shipping companies can also carry empty containers that belong to, or are rented by, companies that do not have approval to operate along the line, according to local reports.

The ministry has not specified any dates when the rules will take effect.

In December 2008, Taiwan and China established direct cross-strait shipping links, but only Taiwanese and Chinese ships registered in Taiwan, China, or Hong Kong are allowed to use the route.
