India Kochi Terminal First Phase Underway

DP World is planning to complete the first phase of the Rs3,000 crore ($646.9m) Vallarpadam terminal project in Kochi, India.

The container terminal operator also expects to start operation at the terminal by the end of the year, according to India’s Economic Times.

The company has invested Rs1,250 crore ($269m) in the first phase which has a quay length of 600m and a design capacity of one million teu.

Once complete, the new terminal will allow handling of containers such as the Emma Maersk, which has capacity of over 12,500teu and deadweight of over 150,000mt.

The Vallarpadam terminal is a public-private-partnership project being developed by DP World, along with the Cochin Port Trust.

In the second phase, DP World will develop a further 300m of quay with a capacity of 1.5m teu, while in the final phase, the terminal will have a capacity of 3m teu.
