Finnish engineering giant Wärtsilä has struck a deal with STX Finland Oy shipyard to supply four Wärtsilä 32 engines for a polar supply and research vessel.
The company said the 134m ice-strengthened vessel will be powered by four six-cylinder in-line Wärtsilä 32 engines.
The ship which will be launched in March 2012 and can carry 45 crew and about 100 researchers and passengers, it said.
Wärtsilä plans to deliver the engines in February 2011.
The Republic of South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs owns the vessel, which will be operated by SMIT Amandla Marine, South Africa.
