The Port of Salalah in Oman is planning to issue a tender for a $120m expansion of the port’s container and general cargo terminal.

The project, which is part of a $645m expansion project, involves building a further 1,200m of multi-purpose berths, a northern breakwater, facilities for dry-bulk commodities and a liquids jetty.

Once complete, the terminal will be able to handle 40 million tons of dry-bulk commodities and five million tons of liquid products a year.

Under the revised plan, the container terminal will be gradually expanded to reach a total quay length of 8km over 20 years.

Construction has already started and new berths are scheduled to be operational by the end of 2012.
