MMC Norilsk Nickel has singed a €100m ($135m) contract with Nordic Yards to build an arctic-class tanker.

The Russian metal producer said the 169m tanker, Arc7, with a capacity of 15,000t, is scheduled for delivery by the end of September next year.

The vessel, with a beam of 23.1m, has a shaft capacity of 13,000kWt, the company said.

The vessel has an azipod propeller engine that allows the tanker to break 1.5m ice.

Norilsk Nickel expects the arctic-class vessel to supply fuel and lubricants to Dudinka and take gas condensate from the Pelyatkinsky gas field to the continent.

During 2006-09, Nordic Yards built four diesel electric vessels for Norilsk Nickel.
