The CNY15bn ($2.42bn) project includes the construction of a 92.2km-long and 300m-wide shipping channel, according to seatradeasia.

Once complete, the channel will be able to accommodate 50,000dwt ships and container vessels with a capacity of 2,000 to 4,000teu.

A 12-year dredging programme was carried out in three phases, increasing the depth of the estuary shipping channel from 7m to 12.5m.
