Engineering giant Wärtsilä has signed a deal with Samsung Heavy Industries to develop gas-powered dual-fuel merchant vessels.
The Finnish company said its dual-fuel engine technology emits 20-25% less CO2, 90% less nitrogen oxide and reduces sulphur oxide and particulate emissions compared to conventional heavy fuel oil engines.
The joint venture aims to utilise liquefied natural gas as fuel for operating merchant vessels, especially in emissions control areas.
The technology will be linked to large bore dual-fuel engines merged with mechanical propulsion solutions, the company said.
