STX Hits Large Engine Landmark

STX Heavy Industries (STX HI) has produced ten million horsepower (hp) in large-sized engines for operation on new container ships. The 8K90MC-C type 50,000-hp low-speed engine will be installed on a 4,250teu container ship being built for Germany's Rickmers Reederei, the company said.<

STX Heavy Industries (STX HI) has produced ten million horsepower (hp) in large-sized engines for operation on new container ships.

The 8K90MC-C type 50,000-hp low-speed engine will be installed on a 4,250teu container ship being built for Germany’s Rickmers Reederei, the company said.

STX HI completed the production rate in five years and six months, which the company said is the shortest time recorded in the world.

Large-sized engines usually engines range from 13,000hp to 99,000hp.

In 2009 the company built the first ultra-large engine by producing a 12K98MC-C engine.

STX HI annually produces 300 units of low-speed engines with a capacity of four million hp.
