Bintulu Port Holdings is planning to complete the RM300m ($93m) Bintulu Port expansion project by August this year, according to a port official.

The project will enable the port to increase its annual cargo handling capacity by 250,000 TEU to 650,000 TEU, with an option to further increase to one million TEU a year.

The port’s container freight station and stacking yards are also being widened to provide additional services.

Bintulu Port Holdings CEO Mior Ahmad Baiti Mior Lub Ahmad said the expanded capacity can cater to requirements up to 2014.

In 2009 the port handled about 248,000 TEU, a 14% drop from 290,000 TEU a year ago.

In the next two months the port will be readying ten new storage tanks for palm oil storage to boost its storage capacity by 26,000t to 102,000t.
