South Korean seaports handled 1.64 million teu of containers in April, a 22% increase compared to a year ago.
The total amount of cargo handled by the ports also increased 10.7% from a year earlier to nearly 95 million tons, according to the Korean Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.
Pyeongtaek Dangjin Port posted a 59% increase while the Port of Busan and the Port of Gwangyang registered year-over-year increases of 26.7% and 16.8%, respectively.
The figures represent a 0.7% decrease on April 2008 figures.
The government attributed the rise in cargo volume to increasing maritime trade following the global downturn.
