STX Shipbuilding Corporation has signed a memorandum of understanding with Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) to build a new shipyard in Kronstadt, St Petersburg.

The South Korean shipbuilding group said it will help USC’s Admiralty Shipyard modernise the yard’s design, construction and shipyard operations.

STX will also establish a technology centre at STX Finland’s Helsinki shipyard for developing ice-class ships.

The centre will develop the production of marine diesel engines designed for small- and medium-tonnage ships, including gas carriers and chemical tankers, the company said.
