The US Government has approved a proposal by American Feeder Lines (AFL) to start coastal container services, including a series of ten vessels of 1,300teu.

AFL said its coastal shipping project has been designed to establish a container feeder and domestic freight service in the east and Gulf coasts in support of international container lines.

The vessels will optimise environmental benefits including burning low sulphur fuel and less CO2 consumption.

AFL said the project could help serve the east and Gulf coasts with larger ships after the expansion of the Panama Canal by 2014.

The company said it is also planning to increase the fleet to 40 ships.
