Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) has ordered two 10,700teu container ships to be built at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering.

The Singapore-based company said the order is part of a 12-ship order worth $1.2bn placed with Daewoo last month.

NOL said the ships will add to a series of eight vessels of similar size already on order, which are expected to be completed in 2012.

The company’s liner shipping arm, APL, handled 18% more cargo in the four weeks to 23 July compared with the corresponding period last year, amounting to 220,200feu.
