The US will invest $17.9m to dredge the main navigation channels in New York Harbour, which will enable larger cargo ships to enter the Global Marine Terminal in Jersey City.

The stimulus will be invested to deepen the water channel between Kill Van Kull and Port Jersey Channel, according to the government.

The project, which previously received funding under the 2010 Energy and Water Development Act, is expected to be completed by September 2011.

The shipping terminal was purchased earlier by the Port Authority, which plans to expand it to handle more cargo.
