Van Oord has secured a dredging contract for the Cape Lambert Port B project in Australia to expand the port capacity by 50mtpa.

The contract from Hamersley Iron includes the construction of a new port facility at the exiting Western Australia port, train unloading infrastructure, stockyard, ship loading facilities as well as wharf and dredging works.

The port will be expanded with four berth pockets, a port basin, a turning basin and a channel to connect the facilities with the existing entrance channel.

The Netherland-based company will also remove underwater obstructions and dredge the seabed for about nine million cubic metres of sand, gravel and rock.

Financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed and dredging works are scheduled for completion in November 2011.
